Yesterday, versus the Watkinson School, the Lady Pioneers of EHS kicked off their 2013 season. In a closely contested game for the first few innings, the team showed major improvements in the areas of communicating, supporting each other, as well as staying positive and focused.
The opposing pitcher presented a new challenge for the squad with velocity and a more traditional windup routine than the team had seen much of. The girls struggled pretty much across the board through their first at bats but as the course of the game wore on, more frequent and solid contact was made, resulting in Amanda Jarmolowicz and Chloe Segal earning the first two RBI’s of the season along with hits for many of the girls, including some newcomers.
Natasha Armstrong and the rest of the defense showed heart and tenacity, overcoming early jitters to finish strong. Leslie Kane and Liza Greenblatt each had terrific moments on the mound and Molly Cappucci and Thea Belak had solid performances anchoring the backstop. The second wave of players showed the same hustle and grit as the starters.
However, a 14-2 loss is not something to get to caught up in; the team will improve after break (fingers crossed) in anticipation of what will be a hectic, fun, and memorable season!
